Hockey Teams Make their Mark on Tournament

Ashby's under 18 boys' hockey team are celebrating after reaching the semi finals of the England Hockey Super 6s competition.

The boys first secured their place in the Midlands final following a 4 -2 win over Trent College, a 4 - 0 victory against Rugby School and a 4 - 4 draw with Oakham School. All three opponents were teams from independent schools.

In the Midlands final, they played three games, winning two and losing to Repton, to qualify for the semi finals. They were defeated in the semi finals by Bromsgrove School.

PE teacher and coach Vikki Rundle-Brown said: 'In the semi final, our boys played extremely well but sadly lost to a tough Bromsgrove team which later lost to Repton in the final.'

Our team put in some strong performances against tough competition from some of the best hockey-playing schools in the country so we're extremely proud of what they achieved and excited to see what they can do next!'

This was also the first time that Ashby School had entered a girls' team in the tournament (pictured below).

Mrs Rundle-Brown added: 'For most of the girls, it was the first time they had played indoor hockey. Although they didn't progress to the next round, they showed great determination and resilience and loved the experience.'"

Near Miss for Ashby's Trailblazing Hockey Team

After almost two years without school hockey, Ashby's team relaunched its campaign for victory in the England Hockey Schools Super 6 indoor competition.

Ashby was the first state school team for a number of years to make it to the national finals in 2019.

The boys played the first round of this year's competition at Bromsgrove, beating Bromsgrove and Trent to go top of the group and qualify for the regional finals.

They then travelled to Aldersley Leisure Village for the regional finals, beating a confident Rugby School 7 - 1.

Ashby went on to suffer a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Oakham who had watched the previous game and had the experience to block Ashby's attacking players out of the game.

Ashby made it to the semi-finals as runners up where they faced Repton, renowned as the best team in the country. After fighting extremely hard, Ashby lost 2-1, meaning they did not qualify for the national finals.

Vikki Rundle-Brown, Deputy Headteacher and hockey coach, said: "Although they didn't reach the final, the boys left in high spirits and are looking forward to the outdoor competition. Our first game is at home against Ratcliffe."
